Gålå is located on a mountain plateau 1,000 meters above sea level, in the heart of Gudbrandsdalen between Oslo and Trondheim. For over 130 years, people have traveled here for the nature, the tranquility and the views toward Rondane and Jotunheimen.

A year-round destination for mountain experiences
The nature and landscape of Gålå
Gålå is situated in an open high mountain landscape around Lake Gålåvatnet, where views stretch far across mountains and plateaus. Here, nature is easily accessible – whether you head out on skis, on foot or by bike.
In winter, the mountains offer around 230 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails groomed by Gålå Turløyper. In addition, Gålå is connected to the trail network in Peer Gynt’s kingdom, with access to 630 km of trails. At the alpine center, you can ski both on and off the slopes, or hop on one of the sleds available for rent.
In summer, the area is a natural starting point for mountain hikes, cycling, fishing and relaxing days by the water.
The mountain area surrounding Gålå takes you through forests, across open plateaus and up to viewpoints with sweeping vistas toward Rondane if you want to explore the nature.
The Peer Gynt Road and mountain experiences
Gålå is connected to Lauvåsen, Fagerhøy and Skeikampen via the Peer Gynt Road, one of Norway’s most famous mountain roads. The road winds through high mountain terrain between Gausdal and Rondane, with views over plateaus, lakes and the surrounding mountain areas.
In summer, this is a popular area for cycling, mountain hikes and leisurely drives in the mountains. Many use the area for longer bike rides on the gravel roads, or as a starting point for hikes into the mountains on foot.
The Peer Gynt Road also connects several of the mountain areas around Gålå and makes it easy to experience nature in a larger landscape – whether you want to cycle a day trip, hike in the mountains or simply stop and enjoy the view.
For many, this is a natural part of summer at Gålå: mountains, plateaus, views and long days outdoors.
Long tradition as a travel destination
Gålå has been a tourist destination since the late 1800s. Even before the sanatorium and tourist hotels were established, people found their way here to experience the high mountains and the fresh air.
With the establishment of tourist hotels and later a sanatorium, Gålå became a well-known place for recreation. Many came here for rest and health-giving mountain air – something that is still part of the area’s identity.
The area also bears clear traces of the mountain farming traditions in Gudbrandsdalen. At Solbraa mountain farm by Lake Valsvatnet, Anne Hov developed brown cheese in the 1800s – a discovery that would later become an important part of Norwegian food culture.
At Gålå, you get major cultural experiences with nature as the setting
Every summer, audiences gather by Lake Gålåvatnet when the open-air performance of Peer Gynt is staged as part of the Peer Gynt Cultural Festival. The festival has been held annually since 1967 and attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year.
At the same time, there are also other cultural venues in the mountains. Events such as the Rondaståk mountain festival, concerts, mountain cafés and gathering places create a vibrant cultural life throughout the year.
Sports and activities
Gålå is an active mountain destination, and an area with long traditions in cross-country and alpine skiing.
At Gålå Sports Facility, both races and training sessions are held throughout the winter. The ski resort and trail network are used by families, recreational skiers and competitive racers alike.
Clubs such as Peer Gynt Alpine Club and Fron Trasher Team help develop new generations of skiers and snowboarders, while the surrounding mountains are used by everyone who wants to be out in nature.
Gålå through the year
Gålå is a destination with distinct seasons.
Winter offers cross-country skiing, alpine skiing and peaceful days in snow-covered mountains. Spring means Easter atmosphere and long days outdoors.
Summer opens the mountains for hikes, cycling, fishing and cultural events. Autumn brings clear mountain days, vibrant colors and a slower pace.
